FUNCTION The Registered Veterinary Technician is a key role in the Nine Lives medical team.
They assist in multiple procedures and get exposure to a wide range of cases - Primarily spending time assisting with surgeries at our Medical Clinic, and additionally in shelter medicine at our Adoption Center where our Nine Lives shelter animals are located.
The role involves providing care for cats and kittens including physical examinations, spay/neuter and other surgeries, medical treatments, and immunizations.
The Registered Veterinary Technician is under the direct guidance and supervision of the Lead RVT and veterinarians.
RVT certification is required; compensation will depend on certification status and experience.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Receive, handle and treat cats with skill, compassion and care Obtain and record patient histories Able to perform TPR Has excellent drug calculation skills Can draw and give vaccines Can draw and give medications Collect specimens and perform routine laboratory procedures and tests Dispense and administer medications, vaccines, fluids and treatments as prescribed by veterinarians Provide nursing care for injured or ill cats Prepare patients, instruments and equipment for surgery Assist with anesthesia and intubation of cats.
Work with veterinarians to write up treatment plans for sick cats; administer daily treatments Assure that monitoring and support equipment such as anesthetic machines, cardiac monitors, scopes and breathing apparatus are in good working condition Assist in diagnostic, medical and surgical procedures using a range of equipment Maintain knowledge of preventative healthcare recommendations in order to answer client questions, provide education on vaccines, and flea products Maintain inventory of pharmaceuticals and medical supplies Clean, maintain and sterilize instruments, equipment, and materials Work well with all team members and ensure that your actions support the mission of Nine Lives Perform other duties as assigned EXPERIENCE/
Qualifications:
RVT certification is required 2
years experience as a Registered Veterinary Technician Experience in an animal shelter preferred but not required Ability to observe animal appearance and activity for general physical condition, obvious signs of illness, disease and discomfort Knowledge of the use, care, sterilization and storage of veterinary instruments, materials, and equipment Knowledge of the instruments, materials, and standardized procedures used in a variety of treatments to provide tableside assistance Must be a self-starter and able to work independently Strong communication and client service skills; ability to work with clients and patients in a professional, friendly, tactful manner.
Must love cats! PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT.
Ability to stand for long periods of time while performing work requiring concentration and manual dexterity Physical requirements include frequent lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds.
Subject to kneeling, lifting, sitting, standing, stooping, bending, and walking to perform the essential functions While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to hazards associated with aggressive patients; hazards associated with infected animals and controlled substances; exposure to unpleasant odors and noises; exposure to bites, scratches and animal waste; possible exposure to contagious diseases Work Schedule:
